The global e-conference "Turning the COVID-19 crisis into an opportunity: what's next for social protection?" will take place on 5, 6 and 8 October 2020. In addition to providing a space to evaluate, share experiences on and learn about social protection responses to COVID-19, the event will also serve as a moment for reflection, allowing the community to discuss the future of social protection in a post-pandemic scenario.

The virtual conference will comprise a mix of panels and collaborative interactive sessions to encourage the debate around creative solutions to current challenges. To ensure the attendance of participants from different regions, activities will be held across different time zones over the three days.

On the first day, three regional sessions will be offered (Asia and the Pacific/Africa and the Middle East /Latin America and the Caribbean) on social protection responses to COVID-19, followed by detailed country cases and collaborative peer-to-peer activities. The second day will provide an open space with a thematic approach to address questions related to COVID-19 and beyond. Participants will be able to join different sessions throughout the day. The last day will feature a global perspective to summarise the discussions and share lessons learned. Finally, to conclude the experience, participants will explore what’s next for social protection. More information will soon be available at the socialprotection.org platform.

The event is the first global e-conference organised by socialprotection.org and will also mark the platform´s fifth anniversary. socialprotection.org is an unbranded platform, supported by the G20 Development Working Group and financed by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and  the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The initiative was launched in September 2015 and is hosted by the IPC-IG. It has been developed in consultation with the World Bank Group, the ILO, and leading agencies gathered under the Social Protection Inter-Agency Cooperation Board (SPIAC-B).
