BRASILIA, September 12th, 2015 – With the world on the verge of adopting the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which will shape the future development agenda in tackling  global poverty, inequality, gender issues, climate change challenges among others themes, the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG) aims to support this pursuit with the launch of an innovative online platform dedicated to social protection: socialprotection.org. The platform is able to foster knowledge-sharing and capacity-building on efficient social protection policies and programmes by drawing on the experiences of low-income (LICs) and middle-income (MICs) countries.

socialprotection.org is an unbranded, interactive online hub which hosts contributions from individuals, multi- and bilateral agencies, non-governmental organisations, researcher centres, academiaand government bodies to foster South-South learning on social protection. It is supported by the Development Working Group of the G20, financed by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and hosted by the IPC-IG.

Over the past decade, social protection programmes have been introduced in many developing countries to tackle poverty and inequality. Since 2010, the number of programmes in LICs and MICs has almost doubled, with every country having at least one programme in place. Yet, less than one fifth of the population in developing countries is covered by social protection programmes.[1] Financial constraints, designing and implementing effective programmes as well as targeting and delivering benefits to the population that needs it most represent the central challenges confronting social protection policymakers, practitioners and researchers worldwide. These challenges present a growing need for the gathering and sharing of specialized knowledge, which socialprotection.org aims to provide and support.

The strategy behind the platform is to bridge an important knowledge gap by providing accessible, accurate and up-to-date content on social protection themes, programmes and policies through collaborative and interactive learning tools, contributed by and for the platform’s user.” said Alicia Spengler, IPC-IG’s Project Analyst of the platform.

“The member driven nature of the platform is why we encourage members to share their work, participate in the discussion forum and online communities, explore a number of relevant studies tackling social protection in domestic and regional contexts, and engage with the interactive tools.Spengler added.

The user-friendly platform has its features divided into four sections; Discover, Connect, Learn and Share, designed to provide an overview of options of active engagement with the content. In the Discover section, users can search for Publications, Programme Profiles, fellow Members and Stakeholders. Users can engage with other members dedicated to a particular interest area by creating or joining an Online Community, connect more informally in the Discussion Forum, or search for Events they might wish to participate in, all available under the Connect section. The Learn section provides access to the platform’s Virtual Campus, Learning Tools and Social Protection Glossary, as well as up-to-date social protection related News. The Share section offers the platform’s defining features, allowing users to share their own original content and initiatives, including Webinars and Surveys.
