Under this partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the IPC-IG investigated the social protection of fishers in Brazil, Paraguay and Tunisia to generate evidence on adequate compensation during closed fishing seasons.

Project Results

Over the course of the project, the IPC-IG developed the following outputs for each component:

Paraguay: 
- Report containing a socioeconomic profile of artisanal fishers in Paraguay;
- Policy brief containing the review (stocktaking) of social protection programmes in Paraguay with a focus on its performance – coverage, adequacy, and comprehensiveness - in reaching out to artisanal fishing communities; and 
- Presentation of the results on the studies on Paraguay fishers for the Ministry of Social Development of Paraguay. 

Brazil:
- Report mapping international experiences with financial compensation for fishers during the closed fishing season for the Brazilian component, detailing their main features.

Tunisia:
- Benchmarking report on the regulation and social protection mechanisms for artisanal fisheries in countries with similar context in order to inform stakeholders to design and implement social protection programs/reforms; 
- Policy brief on social protection performance for artisanal fishers in Tunisia;
- Feasibility study including legal, institutional, and operational feasibility, of alternative approaches to extend social protection coverage and benefit adequacy to both artisanal fishers (boats under 5T) and workers in the artisanal fishing sector.
