Fabio Veras, Senior Research Coordinator at the IPC-IG and at the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea), delivered a statement at the United Nations’ “High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development”. The forum examined new dimensions of the global commitment to ensuring “that no one will be left behind” and the challenges in protecting and empowering vulnerable groups to increase resilience and recovery in the years to come.

Veras highlighted that the COVID-19 crisis has shed light on the importance of social protection as a social and economic policy: “New databases, payment systems and financing mechanisms used in the response to the crisis will be key in informing a long-due and substantial expansion of social protection coverage, to accelerate progress towards achieving SDG Target 1.3 by 2030”.

He also took the opportunity to share the IPC-IG’s dashboard, which maps more than 900 social protection measures in the Global South. The initiative—currently hosted by the socialprotection.org platform, with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ GmbH) and the Social Protection Approaches to COVID-19—Expert advice (SPACE)—can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/DashboardIPC. Mariana Balboni, Senior Project Officer at the IPC-IG and the socialprotection.org platform, took part in the side event “South-South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Social Protection Systems in the COVID-19 Recovery and Achievement of the 2030 Agenda”.

She shared valuable information on South-South cooperation through the socialprotection.org platform, the IPC-IG’s work in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and the task force to disseminate information and promote discussions on how social protection systems and measures were being used worldwide to respond to the COVID-19 emergency—a joint effort between the IPC-IG, socialprotection.org, GIZ and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

“The COVID-19 crisis has shown that shock-responsive social protection systems, as well as financing and expanding social protection for informal workers, are pressing challenges in MENA, Latin America and other regions. One-on-one technical sessions with policymakers and experts from different countries, which the IPC-IG supports and facilitates, can enhance learning on these issues. Let us build on our common ground and learn from each other to make inclusive and sustainable social protection systems a reality, leaving no one behind”, stated Balboni.
