The online dashboard ‘Social Protection Responses to COVID-19 in the global South’ is now available on the UNDP Data Futures Platform
The online dashboard ‘Social Protection Responses to COVID-19 in the Global South’, which documents shock-responsive social protection measures implemented in the global South during the COVID-19 pandemic, is now available on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Data Futures Platform.
The dashboard, which has been available on the socialprotection.org platform since its launch in May 2021, is the result of the project “Social protection responses to COVID-19 – database interface (Online Dashboard).” Its availability on the Data Futures Platform will allow it to reach more government representatives as well as decision and policymakers around development and social issues, since the platform targets these groups to provide cutting-edge interactive analyses, visualisations and simulations on a wide range of socioeconomic topics. It also gathers data from several UN agencies, such as the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), among others.

Several social protection measures were established or scaled up around the world to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19. To document these measures through a shock-responsive lens, the IPC-IG, in partnership with a team of researchers supporting the Centre’s COVID-19 task force, developed a common tracking matrix. It offers inputs for systematic analyses of adaptations and innovations of social protection interventions in the global South.
Subsequently, socialprotection.org and the IPC-IG, in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ), SPACE and the United Nations Development Programme’s Brazil Country Office (UNDP Brazil), launched an interactive dashboard with visual indicators based on the COVID-19 matrix. The goal of this interface was to provide detailed insights into countries’ social protection responses to the health crisis and offer a repository of experiences and government practices worldwide.
The dashboard is based on a tracking matrix featuring detailed information on several implementation features of the responses. It has 13 indicators divided into five thematic sections: i) overview of responses, including geographical coverage, social protection components and instruments, and linkages with existing programmes; ii) identification of beneficiaries and application tools; iii) delivery mechanisms; iv) coverage; and v) adequacy of benefits. Since September 2022, the dashboard has also unfolded into a monthly series of blog posts on the socialprotection.org platform, which will run until March 2023. It also served as a source for a series of publications on child-sensitive social protection responses in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
